You don’t have to live with headaches.
How you can get relief quickly by treating the cause
Headaches affect so many of us and can be hard to escape. Whether the pain is subtle or severe, it’s that throbbing on the sides of your head that just won’t go away. It’s that pain behind your eyes that drives you mad as you try to concentrate at your desk. They can sometimes be constant, mild, and subtle-enough that we can half-ignore them as they put a haze over everything we do. Or sometimes they debilitate us and incapacitate us so that laying in a dark room is about all we can manage. Regardless of what end of the spectrum you are on, you owe it to yourself to find a solution.
Many people think of headaches as one of two things: “regular” headaches and migraines. The aforementioned “regular” headache can be separated into one of several categories including tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches. Common tension headache symptoms include a throbbing-aching feeling on the sides of your head, while symptoms of a cervicogenic headache involve pain wrapping from your neck up over the top of your head to your forehead. A chiropractor should be able to help you sort through different variations of these, in order to determine a solution.
The root cause of headaches are often the vertebra of the upper cervical spine (neck) or upper thoracic spine (back). These can have restricted movement that is often the root cause of the pain. They can contribute to tightness of muscles such as the suboccipitals, at the very top of the neck, which refer pain to different parts of your head and even be involved in nerve entrapment that causes headache pain on different regions of your head. Stress may also contribute to restriction and tightness. Regardless, chiropractic and Active Release Technique (ART®) treatments are very effective for treating these headaches. My patients often report dramatic improvement in their headaches within just a few treatments!
The other primary type is the more-severe migraine headache. We often refer to any intense headache as a “migraine”. However, a true migraine headache involves several factors that often include visual haziness called an “aura” and possibly nausea and light sensitivity. Regardless, chiropractic has been shown to be effective in treating headaches whether they are true migraines or intense headaches of another type.
Because many headaches and migraines are caused by tight joints and muscles around the neck and upper back, chiropractic and Active Release Technique® are the perfect methods to eliminate the associated pain.
