Don’t let shin splints keep you out this season!
Runners often experience shin splints with increased mileage or when starting back into a training regimen after a period time off from running. “Shin splints” are essentially a term used to describe an overuse syndrome involving leg muscles that include muscles of the foot and ankle, as well.
Pain is caused initially when the tibia bone’s periosteum, the thin layer of tissue encasing the bone, slightly tears off its attachment. Tightness and restricted joints and muscles can contribute to this injury.
Dr. Jaffer Barlas at Barlas Chiropractic near South Lake Union in Seattle can help you alleviate your shin splint pain and get you back to running and the activities you love.
Active Release Technique® (ART®) soft tissue therapy, instrument assisted soft tissue therapy and chiropractic adjustment to nearby joints can allow muscles to properly elongate and joints to move with their proper ranges of motion to allow for normal function and pain-free running. Remember that with repeated stress, such as continued running, scar tissue can form, adding to the cumulative injury cycle that created your injury begin with, and hence, running through shin pain for too long can lead to worse injuries such as stress fractures of the lower leg.
Before you experience an injury such as that, which keeps you out for months, get treatment for your shin splints!
As with the condition plantar fasciitis, low or high arches of the foot and poor footwear can predispose a person to this injury. Additionally, very tight calf and anterior lower leg musculature can result in shin splints occurring. It is important to address footwear when treating this problem. A combination of soft tissue therapies with adjustments to the surrounding joints and strengthening exercises for the foot and surrounding musculature can relieve symptoms of this problem.
Before your leg pain gets worse and becomes a more-serious problem, schedule an appointment at Barlas Chiropractic on Westlake Avenue in Seattle. You can get your pain under control the sooner you take action.
